2.6 GHz AMD Phenom9900

Although Advanced Micro Devices launches its long awaited "Phenom" processors on Monday, it's the "Spider" platform the company wants enthusiasts to buy.

On the heels of the ATI Radeon HD 3850 launched last week, AMD launched both the AMD Phenom 9600 and 9500 on Monday, which run at 2.3 GHz and 2.2 GHz, respectively. AMD's 790 chipset, meanwhile, will include four board CrossFireX technology, as well as OverDrive, a utility for tuning the frequency, voltage, and other attributes.

AMD is argument is simple : spend about $2,000 for a "Spider" system, and receive benefits like quad GPU performance that would otherwise cost thousands. If consumers do so, AMD will in turn receive revenue from the three of the most valuable pieces of real estate inside a PC, as well as establish a platform among the enthusiast community.

Oddly enough, much of this battle will take place on paper. In the latest tit for tat exchange, both AMD and Intel skipped the current platforms altogether. Instead, they provided completely unavailable processors for performance comparisons.

The 2.6 GHz AMD Phenom9900, due in March 2008 and the Intel QX9770, Intel's first processor with a 400 MHz front side bus, which is due sometime in the first quarter of next year.
